Triton’s Nursing program provides students with a basic knowledge of nursing theory and practice, humanities, and social and biological sciences. Clinical experiences are provided in a variety of settings. Graduates earn an associate in applied science degree and qualify to sit for the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX) for the registered nurse. Candidates for the RN-NCLEX are required by law to meet fingerprinting requirements, submit to a criminal background check and report conviction of any criminal offenses as part of the licensure application process. The program is approved by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, 100 West Randolph, Suite 9-300, Chicago, IL 60601, (312/814-4500). The associate in applied science degree is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta GA 30326 (800/669-1656), website: www.acenursing.org.

Admission is determined by a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and higher, along with TEAS score of 63% and higher. Candidates are required to meet health requirements and criminal background check with no findings, a negative alcohol breath testing and drug screening requirements prior to entry into the clinical setting. Students with a positive background check that include any disqualifying conditions, as defined by Federal and State law will not be allowed to enter the program (TITLE 77: PUBLIC HEALTH).

Candidates are also required to have a current CPR certification and Health Insurance.

Preference is given to candidates who are permanent residents of Triton College’s district. Nursing is a selective admission program with preference for admission given to the most highly qualified individuals for the available seats. Nursing courses have a higher tuition rate and fees.

Due to the complexity of our individual instruction, specialized technology, and clinical experiences, nursing courses have a higher tuition rate and fees. All students must complete all coursework with a grade of "C" or higher. Attendance to the Nursing Information Session is highly encouraged.

Upon successful completion of the Prerequisites and Pre-Admission courses, LPN’s must petition to receive credit for AHL 109, NUR 106, NUR 107, NUR 108, AHL 112*. *With Pharmacology in LPN education. Total 12 credits.

Notes: Completion of a nursing pre-admission test must be within the last two years.

All prerequisite coursework must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher. Math and Science prerequisites must not be more than five years old from the first day of the program.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing program, the graduate will be able to:
  1. Integrate acquired knowledge and skills necessary to systematically and independently develop a patient centered plan of care based on evidence-based outcomes for a diverse patient population.
  2. Incorporate the patient, family or support person’s preferences, values, and needs when developing and providing care.to a diverse population.
  3. Independently utilize clinical reasoning and nursing judgment when developing and implementing an evidence-based plan of patient care to a diverse population.
  4. Collaborate and coordinate with the health care team, patient, family and support persons in planning and providing care to diverse populations while fostering respect and dignity.
  5. Independently utilize and evaluates effective communication with diverse patient populations and healthcare members to provide patient centered care.
  6. Evaluate quality improvement processes to improve patient care outcomes for a diverse population.
  7. Independently utilize information and patient care technology to support patient care decision making and ensure effective communication.
  8. Independently demonstrate skills to minimize risk of harm to a diverse patient population and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance.
  9. Demonstrate professional, legal, and ethical behaviors as a member of multidisciplinary teams, through a practice of caring, competent, patient-centered nursing in conformance with the Illinois's Nursing Practice Act and the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice and Code of Ethics.
