Triton provides students the opportunity to develop a comprehensive understanding of the discipline of Sociology and the applied field of Social Work. A student planning to transfer to a four-year school and major in Sociology or Social Work can meet most, if not all, of the general education requirements and some of the major requirements for those two areas. The specific major field courses completed will be determined by whether the student plans to major in Sociology or Social Work.

Program learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of the Associate in Arts Degree (Sociology) emphasis, the graduate will be able to:

  1. Identify assumptions underlying theoretical arguments.
  2. Analyze assumptions underlying particular research methodologies.
  3. Recognize alternative viewpoints on social scientific issues.
  4. Apply the sociological imagination to the intersection of biography and history within social structures.
  5. Explain basic concepts such as culture, roles, norms and social institutions.
  6. Describe relationships between culture and social structure.
  7. Relate how demographic and other social changes affect social structures and individuals.
  8. Demonstrate the effects of social institutions and their interactions on individuals.
  9. Summarize how societal and structural factors influence individual behavior and the self's development.
  10. Distinguish how personal and cultural values result from and affect social processes.
